Goal Setting

You are now on the second step of your journey to achieving your dream. Whether your dream is an exotic holiday, financial freedom or a new house, as with most journeys, you need some kind of map to get you to your destination. Without it, you could find yourself 'up the creek without a paddle'!

Fact: The brain operates in a positive way. It recognises actions and by having a firm idea of what you actually want in your life, you stand a much better chance of getting it.

Why? By focusing on what you want, you will recognise opportunities when they arise. If you find this difficult to believe, think about booking a holiday. Suddenly your holiday destination is mentioned a lot, either in the media or by other people. If you hadn't thought about going there, you probably wouldn't have noticed it.

OK I believe you. Now how do I go about it?

Recording your Goals

Back to the first of the three R's: 'Rite' it down. Or just as before, tape them or create a way to keep your goals in mind. Some people may have already written down their goals. But rather than writing a whole list of things down, try separating them into manageable chunks. Things you can achieve in the short term as well as over a longer period. Your goal - going on an exotic holiday for example, may need a few steps implementing before you can achieve it.

*where do you want to go?

*when do you want to go?

*how will you get there? (transport etc.)

*how much money do you need to save?

Getting what you want is not magic, it involves a little effort first. Think about your goal, then break the steps required to get there into time periods: one month, six months, one year and five years. Review them at the end of each segment. Each time you finish a step, tick it off. If you haven't achieved it during the set period, move it on to the next. Don't castigate yourself, just resolve to try harder and find other ways of getting there next time.
